How Do You Know If You Have Made the Right Decision?

This blog is inspired by conversations with my coachees. How often do you get caught up thinking about all the what ifs when making a decision, which ultimately leads you taking no actions?

Of course, it is important when we are deciding on something important, as important as where is our next career direction, we put in the time necessary to think about all the pros and cons and the impact of the decision.

However, you know what I am talking about when you have considered everything and you continue to analyse over and over again, thinking about what if you make the wrong decision and what if you will regret this decision. You also know that this state of analysis paralysis is not giving you any new insights and in the heart of hearts you know what option you want to go for but you are scared.

Typically at this point of the conversation with my coachee, I will ask "What is this overthinking behaviour telling you?" to which they would answer "I have a fear of things not working out. I want the outcome to be certain so that I know how to act".

Then I will ask "What is this fear doing to you?" and they would answer something like "It is not helping me to move forward. It is actually holding me back from taking actions for what is right for me."

A lot of times, we know what is the right decision for ourselves if we listen to our intuition. However, our head hasn't caught up yet with our hearts so we need to give our head the rational reasons.

So when you find yourself here, then I would like you to ask yourself this question: "How do you know if you have made the right decision?" Then ta-da you will realise that you will have to take action to find out more if it is the right decision and then adapt from there.
